We know there are questions around travel amid the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak. Read our note here.

If going on a vacation is on your mind, you're likely to dream of summer destinations with white-sand beaches and palm trees. But why wait until summer? There are tons of places that are just as beautiful in spring. Here are six cities that blossom in April.

Washington, D.C.

There's nothing better than touring the U.S. capital and seeing the country's most historic sites in a sea of pink. In early April, Washington, D.C.’s famous cherry blossoms are in full bloom, blanketing the city in color. There’s even an annual National Cherry Blossom Festival with a parade and the Petalpalooza, a weeks-long outdoor extravaganza featuring live music, interactive art installations, and a fireworks show.

Not only are the blossoms beautiful, but the weather in D.C. is just right come April. The chill of winter has passed, and the heat of the summer is yet to come. It’s truly the perfect time to visit.

Thinking about a trip to South America? There’s no better time to visit than April. The end of March marks the final days of the wet season on Peru’s west coast. The sun finally comes out, and everyone can enjoy some much-deserved time soaking up some rays.

April is also a shoulder month, so there aren’t many other visitors to compete with. Plus, you’ll be able to find cheaper rates on airfare and lodging. Hike to the ruins of Machu Picchu and Cusco without having to fight the crowds.

Savannah, Georgia

The best time to visit any city in the South is spring, before the summer humidity sets in. Savannah, Georgia, is a city filled with history and beautiful greenery. In April, many flowers are in full bloom, and green leaves hang off every tree — perfect conditions for touring historical neighborhoods to see the southern architecture.

April is also a time of festivals and celebrations. Live music is everywhere, and it's never hard to find something to do. Plus, the warm weather of April means that it’s officially the start of beach season.

Hawaii is beautiful year-round. You can enjoy warm temperatures and sunny beaches almost every day of the year. But while it might seem like a winter destination, Hawaii is perfect for an April getaway.

April falls between several seasonal changes on the islands. It marks the end of the rainy season, so you’ll be able to enjoy even more sunshine, but you still might be able to catch a glimpse of the whales breaching off the coast as they head north for the summer. Plus, heading to the tropics before the summer rush means off-season pricing on airfare and hotels.

Kailua-Kona is one of the major cities on the Big Island, where you can experience some of the most exciting things Hawaii has to offer, such as the Kīlauea volcano, Mauna Kea (the largest mountain in the world), and, of course, some of the best beaches in the world.

Amsterdam, The Netherlands

There’s never a bad time to visit Amsterdam. The city is an especially beautiful place to spend time outdoors since you'll want to just explore the canals. There is, however, a best time to visit. The popular saying goes, “April showers bring May flowers.” In Amsterdam, it’s more like “March showers bring April flowers.”

Keukenhof is the most famous tulip garden in Amsterdam. Each April, more than 7 million flowers blossom and bring color to the city. "Tulipmania," as it’s called, typically lasts from the end of March until the beginning of May.

If you’re not tired of seeing tulips after your trip to Amsterdam, head to Istanbul to see more spring blossoms. Each year, the Turkish government plants millions of tulips in every park, avenue, and traffic roundabout. Toward the end of March, the flowers begin to blossom.

The official Spring Flower Festival lasts for the entire month of April. While it might still rain every now and then, it’s the perfect time to take in the city. April is also off-peak season, so you’ll be able to enjoy this beautiful spring getaway without breaking the bank.
